Evaluation of a commercial probiotic preparation of a Bacillus sp. as feed additive in swine and broiler rations

The study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a commercial probiotic as feed additive in swine and broiler rations and its effect on the digestibility of dietary nutrients in broilers. The probiotic showed no significant effect on average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed conversion efficiency of swine in all stages of growth. Although not statistically significant, the probiotic slightly improved average daily gain and feed efficiency of swine during the starter period. The inclusion of increasing levels of the probiotic in broiler diets did not significantly affect body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, and feed efficiency of broilers at the prestarter and starter-finisher stages. The interaction between antibiotic and increasing levels of the probiotic significantly improved the digestibility of crude protein, ether extract and nitrogen free extract in broiler chicks. Similarly, apparent metabolizable energy of broiler chicks was significantly affected. The increasing levels of the probiotic in the diet significantly affected the crude fiber digestibility in the broiler chicks. There was no significant effect on digestible crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber and nitrogen free extract of broilers with increasing levels of the probiotic in the diet during th starter stage. Apparent metabolizable energy, however, was improved with the addition of increasing levels of probiotic in broiler starter diets.
