Prospect of sweet potato development in rainfed lowland areas of Kuningan, West Java

A baseline survey and rapid rural appraisal were carried out in rainfed lowland areas of Kuningan namely, Sampora in Cilimus and Sindangbarang village in Jalaksana district. From field observation, interview and secondary data it was concluded that sweet potato cultivation of the farmers' group at Sampora village was different from farmers' group at Sindangbarang although both groups had the sweet potato after rice (harvesting in February-April). Sweet potato variety Ceret was preferred by farmers at Sampora, while farmers at Sindangbarang preferred variety Jitok. Dosages of fertilizer and pesticide at Sampora were higher than that of Sindangbarang. As a result, the productivity of sweet potato and total income of the farmers' group at Sampora were higher than that of Sindangbarang. The relatively low production at both sites when compared to that of research institutes was attributed to an imbalance of the nutrient status of the soil and low response of local variety to fertilizer application. Using the recommended fertilizer and varieties will increase productivity of sweet potato in these areas.
