Heat treatment for the control of corn weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) Motsch in stored corn

Dry heat treatment was found effective in disinfecting the seeds from the different developmental stages of the weevils. All the eggs and adult weevils were killed at exposure to 60 deg C for 2 hours, as well as 70 deg C and 80 deg C for 1 hr at both initial moisture contents (13% and 16%). On the other hand, all the larvae were killed only when the seeds were exposed to 70 deg C and 80 deg C for 1 hr at the higher moisture level. Pre-storage heat treatment did not prevent infestation. The exposure of seeds to 50 deg C and 60 deg C for 2 hours and to 70 deg C and 80 deg C for 1 hr did not prevent weevil population build-up. Germination results showed that the 2 corn cultivars evaluated, XVH-5 and IPB-VAR-1, can be subjected to dry-heat treatment at 50 deg C and 60 deg C for 2 hours and 70 deg C for 1 hr during storage without significantly reducing seed vigor and viability.
