A cereal/Desmanthus virgatus hedgerows based cropping scheme was conducted at IRRI [International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] upland site to evaluate the performance of Desmanthus under hedgerow systems for biomass production and as a source of feed for livestock and green manure for crop production. Double hedgerows of Desmanthus distanced 50 cm apart repeated every 4 m interval were established. Three cropping patterns: a) corn-corn, b) rice-mungbean and c) rice-cowpea were evaluated at different levels of inorganic fertilizer and Desmanthus green manure applications. Fertilizer was applied only during the first cropping and the second crop in the patterns were grown residual nutrients from the previous treatments. Both grain and residue yields of corn and rice were significantly increased by the application of Desmanthus green manure compared to zero fertilizer (approximately 43-216% on corn and 39-146% on rice). Rice yield at D2 (two hedgerows of Desmanthus) rate of Desmanthus green manure application was comparable to 30-30-30 kg NPK/ha while the D4 (4 hedgerows) rate of green manure is similar to the 60-30-30 kg NPK/ha. Performance of the grain legume following in the patterns were not affected by the previous treatments. Average herbage dry matter (DM) production of Desmanthus in 20% land area utilization of hedgerows planting was 1.28 t/ha in one clipping and 11.52 t/ha total DM produced in one year at 40 days interval between clippings.
