Management requirements of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek) after paddy rice

A comparison between minimum tilled and zero tilled plots after paddy rice showed that mungbean had better growth and yield in the minimum tilled plots. The application of rice straw mulch improved further growth and yield of mungbean and the improvement was much more in minimum tilled plots. Weeds grew more profusely in minimum tilled plots but the application of rice straw mulch provided the much needed control as indicated by the reduction in total weed dry weight. When plant density was increased from 200,000 to 600,000 plants/ha, grain yield, crop growth rate and leaf area index increased. Also, weed grown at the later stage of the crop was reduced. Mungbean grain yield and weed dry weight did not significantly change from 400,000 to 600,000 plants/ha with 8 tons/ha mulch treatment in both minimum and zero tillage condition. This study showed that the best treatment combination for maximum grain yield of mungbean grown after paddy rice is minimum tillage with 8 tons/ha rice straw mulch at 400,000 plants/ha plant density. Better grain yield in this treatment combination may have been due to reduced soil bulk density, favorable soil moisture condition and decreased growth of weeds.
