Women in corn farming: the southern Philippine experience

To investigate the role of women played in corn farming, data were gathered through interviews with 160 respondents purposively sampled and equally allocated in four significant corn producing provinces in Southern Philippines. Women's role in corn farming was inclusive of farm activity involvement, time allotment and decision-making participation. Through multiple regression, farm involvement was found dependent on capacities at 5 percent level; time allotment, on cultural climate and the environment, both at 1 percent level; and, decision-making, on cultural climate at 5 percent level. Women seemed favorably disposed of their roles because of the conditioning effect of their respective cultures. As they went through 84.84 hrs of farm work per cropping, they maintained their regular household chores at a daily average of 12.58 hours. Despite their displayed capacity, their technical knowledge, project skills and access to resources remained low.
