The study of Cilacap's semi-enclosed (lagoon) waters, particularly of Segara Anakan-Cilacap (Central Java), was carried out in relation to the effort of making use of this lagoon as a fisheries resource of the area. Water quality parameters measured and analyzed were temperature, acidity, dissolved oxygen, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, nitrate, heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Fe, Ni, and Hg), pesticides and hydrocarbons. The results of the study indicated that the oceanographic conditions of Segara Anakan varied considerably according to seasons and tides. The pollutant levels of the lagoon are attributed more to several rivers discharging into it than to the industrial wastes coming from the eastern part (Cilacap waters). In general, the pollutant levels were below the upper limits allowed by the Indonesian water quality standards established for conservation. Sedimentation which is decreasing the water area, and the influence of the incoming tide on the water quality are also discussed.
