Morpho-physiological modifications in patchouli, Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth, under varying shade and nitrogen levels

Various modifications in the morphology and physiology of patchouli were observed when plants were exposed to 0%, 25%, and 50% shade and fertilized with 0, 6.5 and 13.0 nitrogen (N) per plant. Significant interaction effects of shade and N levels were noted on plant height, number of leaves, leaf chlorophyll content and shoot and root dry weights. Patchouli exposed to full sun exhibited a marked reduction in plant height, internode length, leaf area and leaf chlorophyll content. Higher values of these parameters were noted when shade was provided to the plants. Nitrogen fertilization significantly stimulated all plant features determined except specific leaf weight and volatile oil content of the leaves. A combination of 25% shade and N level of 6.5 g/plant favored the optimum growth and development of patchouli.
