Two levels of lime in combination with urea for straw conservation/treatment

The effects of treating rice straw with two levels (3% and 5%) of lime in combination with 2% urea and kept for 30, 50, and 70 days were studied in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with three replications. Color of treated material turned from greenish and yellowish to brown with shades of green and yellow with longer storage periods. Ammonia odor became intense with undissolved lime, no mold growth was observed. These characteristics were the same for both chemical combinations. Treated rice straw stored for at least 50 days had significantly higher pH compared to day 30. Organic matter content decreased (P0.05) after 30 days and further decreased after 50 days of storage. Crude protein content decreased after 30 days but increased after 50 days and further increased on day 70 with higher values obtained from 3% compared to 5% lime (P0.05). In vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibilities were found higher (P0.05) with 5% compared to 3% lime and with days 50 and 70 compared to days 0 and 30.
