Genotype-environment interaction seed physiological maturity and seed quality in relation to seed production of selected tropical legumes

An experiment to determine the seed physiological maturity (PM) and quality indigo was conducted in four growth cabinets with temperature and relative humidity (RH) combination in the Phytotron at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI [Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines]). In the Phytotron experiment, seed fresh weight, dry weight and germination showed a positive and significant quadratic response with the number of days after anthesis (DAA) while seed moisture content showed negative and significant quadratic response with DAA. Maximum fresh weight, dry weight and germination of the seed were attained 4-8 days earlier in the higher temperature and RH combinations. The timing of highest sed germination and seed PM coincided in almost all treatments. In the field experiments significant genotype x environment (G x E) interaction effects were observed in seed dry matter accumulation and seed quality measured at different DAAs in all sowing of cowpeas and mungbeans, some sowings in vegetable soybeans but not in indigo. The pattern of seed dry matter accumulation showed a significant quadratic response in all crops and sowings. Seed dry matter either remained constant or slightly decline after PM. Top pruning of indigo plants significantly reduced plant height at IRRI, but not at Guimba [Nueva Ecija, Philippines]. Harvesting frequency significantly affected total biomass production at both locations. Based on the results of this study, significant cultivar differences were found for superior quality seed production and seed yield of four legume crops under Los Banos conditions.
