Changes in polyamine content and proteases activity in spring barley leaves during increasing water stress

In leaves of three spring barley cultivars accumulation of polyamines and increased proteases activity were found as a result of water stress. Among the three determined polyamines: putrescine, spermidine and spermine, putrescine was accumulated the most. The highest accumulation was noted for 7th-8th day of the stress when relative water content in leaves fell to 60-50 percent. A rise in proteases activity was particularly pronounced in case of neutral proteases and less for acid ones. Dynamics of changes in proteases activity was different than changes in polyamine content. No clear relationship was found between the level of polyamine accumulation and the level of proteases activity. Following resumption of watering polyamine content and proteases activity lowered gradually reaching the values close to those in plant not subjected to water stress
