Estimation of crop losses in lentil due to insect pests associated with crop growth at Pantnagar, India [Lens culinaris]

Field crop losses due to major insect pests associated with lentil large seeded cv. Pant L-234 and small seeded cv. Pant L-639 during crop growth were studied when the crop was exposed completely/partially to pest damage in comparison to that under complete insecticide protection. Insect pests did not have significant effect on the plant height or number of plants/plot or 1000-grain weight in 1985-1987 seasons. However, the grain yields in completely/partially protected treatments were consistently higher than in completely unprotected crop, although the differences were not statistically significant. A maximum grain yield of 1800 and 2260 kg/ha in Pant L-234 and 1780 and 1880 kg/ha in Pant L-639 was obtained when the crop was completely protected for two years. A maximum benefit-to-cost ratio in Pant L-234 of 4.1 and 3.1 was obtained in the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons, respectively, when only flowering stage was protected by single-spray application; however, increase in yield was low. Similarly, maximum benefit/cost ratio in Pant L-639 of 1.82 was obtained in both years when vegetative stage was protected by four spray applications; again, increase in yield was low
