The effect of genotype X environment interaction on soft bread wheat quality in Tanzania

The effects of genotype, environment and their interaction on soft bread wheat (T. aestivum L.) quality had never been determined in Tanzania's southern highlands. In this study, the quality traits of 8 bread wheat genotypes were evaluated across seven different environments. The quality traits measured included test weight, flour yield, grain and flour protein, baking score, baking volume, flour color, particle size index, dry matter, crude fiber, crude protein and crude fat content. Genotype and environment effects were significant for all of the quality traits, and the genotype x environment interaction was significant for most of the variables. Genotypes with good soft wheat quality were identified. Most quality traits were correlated with each other within genotypes. Implications of these observations on future breeding procedures are also discussed
