Elite wheat materials developed for irrigated wheat production in the middle Awash Valley of Ethiopia

A large number of segregating populations of bread wheat were grown for selection, following the pedigree breeding method, on the irrigated research fields of the Melka Werer Research Center, over the period 1980-84. Seventeen promising lines were identified on the basis of desirable agronomic characteristics. These were tested in replicated yield trials at Melka Werer during three growing seasons (1985-87), and were compared with two wheat varieties suggested for irrigated production in the middle Awash Valley and another variety recommended for rainfed production in the highlands. The trial mean grain yields were 3830, 3320 and 2820 kg/ha during 1985, 1986 and 1987, respectively. Grain yield and other important agronomic data are presented and discussed
