The role of triticale in western australian cereal cropping

Wheat is the major cereal crop in Western Australia, occupying over four million hectares annually. Currently, triticale occupies only a minor role, being sown on 25,000 hectares annually. Wheat generally outyields triticale by approximately 10 percent across the State; however, it is not well adapted to acid soils with high aluminum content, and in severe situations, triticale can outyield wheat by 50 percent. Breeding can improve the tolerance of wheat, but not the level available in triticale. There are large areas of acid soils in the low rainfall areas of Western Australia and a correct choice of tolerant species, triticale or oats, is important. Triticale is recommended for these soils but planting is currently limited by low yields in this low rainfall situation
