Factors affecting the seed bank of Orobanche crenata in fields under lentil based cropping systems in Northern Syria

The parasitic plant Orobanche crenata is a major pest of lentil in the Mediterranean region where the crop is grown in rotation with cereal, summer crops and fallow. The severity of infestation depends on the seed bank of the parasite, which in itself is affected by the seed production of the parasite and the natural decline of seed in soil. Effects on the seed bank of such factors as sowing date of the crop, amount of rainfall, burning of residues and various rotations were studied. Production of viable seed m2 was 23.3 million in a wet season and 700 in a dry season. A delay in the sowing date of lentil by 6 weeks reduced seed production by a factor of 0.29. The mean reduction of the seed bank after growing various crop was 35.1, 9.7 and 36.8 (%) for two field and one pot experiment, respectively.
