Vaccines for duck cholera and duck plague I. Comparison study of adjuvants in duck cholora vaccine: Preliminary report

Immune response in duck against formalin killed Pasteurella multocida, serotype 8: A, a duck strain, was studies. The vaccines, 2 without adjuvant and 4 with oil adjuvanted vaccines, were prepared. They were comparable studies with the vaccines from The Livestock Department and a private farm. The agglutinating antibody titer (using live antigen) and the percent protection were determined. Most vaccines induced highest titer 11 days postvaccination. Mineral oil adjuvanted vaccine induced the highest mean titer, being 58, while aluminium phosphate vaccine produced the lowest mean titer, being 20. At the challenge day, 32 days postvaccination, the mean titer was lower than 5 in all groups of vaccinated ducks. The bacterin in casitone diluent could protect 83 % of vaccinated animal. The other vaccines,ranking in order of percent protection, were a vaccine from a private firm 80 %, aluminium phosphate vaccine and mineral oil plus mycobacterium vaccine 68 %, a vaccine from the Livestock Department 60 %, mineral oil vaccine and corn oil vaccine 50 %. The saline-diluent bacterin produced no protection.
