Economic analysis of the giant fresh-water prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergi De Men) production in Changwat Nakhon Pathom [Thailand] in 1986/87

Result of the estimation suggests that 62.27 % of the variation in the total production can be explained by the total cost of food, the cost of the post larvae and the surface area of the raising pond. Each of these factors also show higher production elasticities relative to the other input: 0.4168, 0.2669 and 0.1920 for the cost of larvae, the total cost of food, and the pond size, respectively. The production function also exhibits a decreasing returns to scale at the rate of 0.8757. Average production costs per rai of surface area are 17,345.89 for all farms, 21,596.31 for the small size farms and 15,743.69 for the large farms, with an average allocation of 92.46 % variable cost and 7.54 % fixed cost. The average per rai revenues for the three corresponding farm sizes are 20,038.76, 24,549.26 and 18,342.15 baht with the average per rai net profit of 2,692.87, 2,952.95 and 2,598.46 baht, respectively.
