[Problem of protozoa on marine shrimp culture]
1986
Lila Ruangpan (Brackish-Water Fishery Div., Bangkok (Thailand))
Protozoa which are considered as the pathogenic agents caused economic losses of marine shrimp were studied during nursing to adult stages of Penaeus monodon and P. merguiensis. The most important protozoa which are especially dangerous to the health of larvae shrimp of both species were described as Zoothamnium sp. and Epistylis sp. Other ectocommensals found on appendage and gills of the shrimp during mysis to post-larvae stages and caused mortality to the stock shrimp were identified as Acineta sp., Lagenophrys sp., Licmophora sp., and Tokophrya sp. The cotton or milky disease produced by Thelohania sp. have caused 55 % losses of cultivated P. merguiensis. Most of young shrimp rearing in pond were massively attacked by gill protozoa, Epistylis sp. Prevention and control of the protozoa were suggested.
