Trypanosoma evansi infection in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) in Northeast Thailand Part II Abortions

Investigations were undertaken after a number of abortions in buffaloes had been reported from the National Buffalo Research Station, Surin during the year of 1984. Abortion rates in late, middle and early pregnancy were 84.4, 11.4 and 0 %. Subsequently, abortions were also reported in a village in Ko-rat. Some showed signs of stiffness and severe conjunctivitis. Trypanosoma evansi had been detected in sick animals. The finding of T. evansi, the serological exclusion of other aethiological agents, previous literatures and other evidences supported that T. evansi infection was the cause of the late gestation abortions and stillbirths in 32 buffalo cows. In 1985, 7 cases of late gestation abortion in buffaloes in 3 different villages were found to be associated with T. evansi parasitaemia. From these findings and the past identification of the cause of abortion from this center, T. evansi infection is the most frequent cause of abortion of buffaloes in Northeast Thailand.
