The potential of seamoss in economic development

Caribbean Seamoss (Rhodophyta spp) is a valuable regional resource with an established inter-island trade. The trade is based on dried seamoss that has been bleached by washing and drying in the sun. This commodity whose demand exceeds supply, commands a retail price up to TT$120.00 per kilo for the dried product and TT$11.25 per litre for the liquid concentrate. In addition to the regional market seamoss farming can provide for export of raw or semi-processed seaweed for agar for bacteriological purposes and the food industry. Concludes that the Caribbean islands are in possession of a resource which if properly managed, could contribute more to the economy of each island.
