Population of Aspergillus flavus in soils and atmosphere of maize fields and storehouses

During 1985-1987, in dry and wet season, soil and air samples were collected from fields and storages from different maize plantations in order to study the seasonal and geographical variations of the population of Aspergillus flavus. There was neither seasonal nor regional difference in A. flavus population in soil and in air. The population of A. flavus was found to be lower in air samples than in soil samples. Small percentage of samples and very low number of population were found in air samples collected from fields (9-11 %) with average number of colony of 0.2-0.3 colony/90 L. In air samples from farmers storages A. flavus was found in 40 % of the total samples but with very low population (av. 0.3 colony/90 L). Highest percentage of positive samples (72 %) and highest number of populations of A. flavus (av. 90 colony/90 L) was found in air samples from middlemen's storages. A. flavus was found in almost every soil sample from farmers' fields, farmers' storages and middlemen's storages with 86 %, 90 % and 96 % respectively. The population found in samples from fields was lower than that from farmers' storages (345-493 colony/g. as opposed to 2090 colony/g.). The population that was found in samples from middlemen's storages appeared to be the highest (4674 colony/g.).
