Effect of initial seed moisture content and packaging materials on quality of stored seeds of groundnut

Unshelled groundnut seed stored well at temperature of 20 deg. Celsius and 50-60 % relative humidity. But it is not practical for Thai farmers to control such conditions. Therefore, the simple and low cost seed storage procedure should be investigated to assist the farmers to maintain good groundnut seed quality. Fresh unshelled groundnut pods were divided into two lots, A and B. Seeds from lot A and B were sun dried for 5 and 11 days, respectively. Each seed lot was stored in different materials i.e., spreading on reed mats, packing in gunny sacks, plastic bags, kerosene cans and earthen jars under ambient condition for 6 months. Seeds were sampled to determine moisture content and standard germination once per month and for seed vigor (accelerated aging method) every two months. The moisture content of the seed from both lots stored by spreading on reed mats and packaging in gunny sacks changed to 5-8 % during the storage period, while the seed stored in plastic bags, kerosene cans and earthen jars had only a slight change in moisture content. Groundnut seed can be stored in well ventilated manner for 6 months with high percentages of seed germination and seed vigor. Higher germination percentages of the seed can be maintained by reducing the moisture content of the seed to 4-5 % by sun-drying up to 10-11 days and subsequently stored in moisture proof materials such as plastic bags or kerosene cans.
