Seven characters of 17 open-pollinated maize composites were studied and estimations were carried out for genotypic variance-covariance matrices, heritability and correlations. Depending on the extent of variation and their correlation with yield, five characters including yield were selected for construction of selection indices. The relative efficiency was the highest (275.4%) when all the five characters were included in the index formula. However, one of the three-variable index and two of the four-variable indices were also equally good. The efficiency of selection increases to as high as 204.6% only when ear height is included, indicating the importance of ear height in a selection program of maize.
