Ownership pattern and available feeds of goat in south west region of Bangladesh

A survey was conducted on ownership pattern and availability of feeds of goat at Chowgacha and Kaligonj thanas of Jessore and Jhinaidah districts during April-May, 1988. The average number of goats per farm was 10.53 in the study area. In general kids from the first kidding were equally shared between the rentee and renter. Cynodon dactylon (Dog grass), Echinochloa crussgalli (Shayama), Imperata cylindrica (Ulugrass), Mangifera indica (Mango leaf), Cicer arietinum (Chickpea grain) at Chowgacha and Cynodon dactylon, Echinochloa crussgalli, Cyperus rotundus (Vadla grass), Imperata cylindrica, Mayna grass, Mangifera indica and Artocarpus heterophyllus (Jackfruit) leaves were the major feeds of goat at Kaligonj. A few farmers at Kaligonj purchased leaves and concentrates for their goats. Mangifera indica, Artocarpus heterophyllus and Musa sepuntun (Banyan) Leaves were generally used as feeds during the crisis period from third week of June to second week of August.
