Female headed households in Comilla; a case study of six villages [in Bangladesh]

The main objective of the paper was to investigate the socio- economic characteristics of the female heads of households, their survival strategies and problems faced by them. It showed that only one-fifth of the total female heads of households assumed the responsibility because of divorce or separation in sharp contrast to four-fifths due to death of husband. One third of the female heads were symbolic heads of the family. More than eighty percent of the female heads were illiterate and more than fifty percent were landless. The average annual per capita income of these households was Taka 4,053/ ($ 107). They had to take lease of others land, to sell property and to take loan for their survival. About 87 and 50 percent of the female heads faced economic and social problems respectively in maintaining their families. Forty four percent of the female heads mentioned that they were in need of opportunity for paid employment to run the family.
