Effect of stem rot and anthracnose disease on the infection of fruit and seed of jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) [in Bangladesh]

Seeds from healthy and diseased pods of stem-rot and anthracnose affected plants along with disease free jute plants (var. D-154) were studied for percentage of infection and viability. Only 2-10% and 5-12% good seeds were found in infected pods of diseased and healthy plants as against 95-100% and 90-95% respectively from healthy pods. Apparently good seeds of infected pods of diseased and healthy plants showed 66 and 65% germination with 23 and 20% infected seeds indicating that seeds from diseased pods showed germination below standard of NSB. Seeds from healthy pods of healthy and diseased plants gave 98 and 95% germination and no seed borne pathogens. Flake seeds of diseased pods of infected and healthy plants showed 5% germination and 46% and 45% infection.
