The effect was remarkable of male sterilant treatement by ethrel on common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), the favorable result was attained with the inflorescence under the length of 2.5 cm and 2% solution of ethrel sprayed. Changes in abortive stamen might be as follow: (1) The pollen mother cells didn't separate from each other but degenerated, and the tetrads were in abnormal shape; (2) The pollen grains were contracted and empty, with no starch grains and lower protein content in them; and (3) The tapetum was similar to grandular type, but formed a cycle and then disappeared. The flower abortion was of two types: anandrous and pollen abortive
