Microbially produced enzymes in diets for piglets: studies with PORZYME SP

The effect of microbially produced enzymes in diets for piglets has been studied using the enzyme pre-mix PORZYME SP from Finnfeeds International LTD. The product, which is claimed to have a multi-enzymatic effect, contains the carbohydrate degrading enzymes alfa-amylase, xylanase, betaglucanase, and cellulase. PORZYME SP is a powder product to be mixed with the feed. The effect was measured on piglets fed the recommended amount of PORZYME SP of 0.1 per cent with their diet. Their basic diet was based mainly on barley (67 per cent) and soya meal (19 per cent). Addition of PORZYME SP increased the beta-glucanase activity of the diets from 4 to 36 IRVU per kg. The two diets - with and without enzyme addition - were fed to 140 piglets. On the day of weaning (28 days), they were allotted to 35 blocks of each four littermates. Each block was divided into two similar pairs fed the basic diet and the enzyme added diet, respectively, ad libitum for 35 days. Addition of enzymes to the feed led to an significant increase in daily gain of the pigs from 431 to 456 g, equivalent to a response of 5.8 per cent. At the same time, the total feed intake of the pigs was increased from 22.4 to 23.4 kg, and FUp per kg gain was reduced from 1.69 to 1.67, but none of these parameters were significantly affected. Neither the frequency of weaning diarrhoea nor the dry matter content of faecal materials were affected by the addition of PORZYME SP to the diet
