The evolution of virulence and fungicide sensitivity patterns of French populations of barley mildew between t986 and t989 is briefly described and discussed. The main changes of the virulence structure of the mildew populations from the northern half of the country are the rapid decline of the frequency of V(La) and the rise of Va7 and Vk. Vg, Va6 and Val2 also declined, but at different rates depending on the gene and the region. Sensitivity to DMI fungicides continued to decline, as did the field performance of these chemicals in mildew control. Sensitivity to morpholine fungicides decreased slightly between 1986 and 1987, but up to now this limited change had been of no consequence on mildew control. Resistance genes new or uncommon in France are thought to be present in several winter and spring barley varieties recently registered
