Forage-rich and half concentrate-rich feeding types of high producing cows

Forage-rich feeding type of dairy cattle prevailed in Estonia before World War II. With this feeding type high production was achieved in good herds. On Piistaoja farm, belonging to Th. Pool, the yearly production per cow was 4,817 kg of milk of 3.69% fat content in 1931-1935. From 1936 to 1940 these indices were 4,943 and 3.89%, respectively. Concentrates constituted 21% of the annual feed expenses in the first period and 26% in the second period. In the best control year (1934-35) the annual milk yield was 5,137 kg in case of using 16.6% of concentrates. The amounts of concentrates were minimized by using high vegetable rations in winter and good cultivated pasture grass in summer. Along with the increase in the prices of concentrates and the reorganization of the agriculture (formation of small farms), the forage-rich feeding type is becoming important again. At present the rations of cows contain less vegetables and potatoes and more silage. The trials on the Laiuse State Farm indicated that in case of using high-quality grass feeds high yields can be achieved, by feeding not only small amounts of concentrates but also quite small quantities of vegetables
