The transfer of genes for mildew resistance from Hordeum spontaneum [powdery mildew]
1991
Fischbeck, G. | Jahoor, A. (Munich Technical Univ. (Germany))
Powdery mildew is one of the most important diseases of barley. The genes for powdery mildew resistance have been introduced from landraces into cultivated barley except gene Mla6 which was incorporated from H. spontaneum. Many H. spontaneum derived lines from Israel were studied to compare their resistance spectra with those of known mildew resistance genes. Fifteen H. spontaneum derived lines were chosen which showed resistance against a selected set of European mildew isolates and crossed several times with different spring and winter barley cultivars. These crosses were tested in each generation with appropriate mildew isolates to identify the presence of mildew resistance genes from H. spontaneum. A plan for distribution of these materials has been worked out with barley breeders in Germany
