Resettlement and Training in the Beles Valley

This article analyses the role that training activities in the resettlement program in the Beles valley in Ethiopia are actually playing or that they could play leading role in implementing health and nutrition education activities. The weakening of the traditional Social and cultural bonds which had characterized community life in the various areas of origin is a critical factor entailing a high risk of adaptation. As a relation to this crisis, in many cases the resettled population has begun to reconstruct a network of social relations, as for instance occurred in the case of religious institutions. However, this kind of reaction is not enough to ensure adaptation to the new environment, precisely because of the conditions with which the resettled populations have to contend. The anomalous situation that has arisen in the resettlement areas, the breaking down of the traditional bonds and the combined action of international cooperation organizations and Ethiopian institutions, have led to the rise of new social agents, which could generically be defined as development agents, such as teachers, farming extension sorkers and primary health care workers. The present study refers to these social agents, analysing the human resources available in the sectors of health and nutrition education and the potential impact of their work on the development of the resettlement area.
