Some cases of canine Dirofilariasis (Heartworm disease)

Canine dirofilariasis is considered to be one of the most important parasitic diseases seen in dogs and must be differentiated from other non pathogenic filarial parasites. Although Dirofilaria immitis is well recognised as a parasite of dogs in the Mediterranean area very few cases have been reported in Greece. In this paper four cases of canine heartworm disease (canine dirofilariasis) are described. The diagnosis was made by identification of microfilariae based on morphological characteristics and measurements. Finally the diagnosis was confirmed by the recovery of adult worms of Dirofilaria immitis from the right ventricle and pulmonary artery
