Isolation of salmonellae from feces of artificially reared calves

A total of 411 samples of feces from calves 15 days to 3 months old belonging to 10 farms of artificially reared calves were examined for Salmonella. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from 39 samples. Positive samples came from 137 calves which suffered from diarrhea. Salmonellae were not isolated from any of the 274 samples which were collected from healthy animals. The bacteriological examination of the first 135 samples was performed according to the classic method using Selenite broth and SS agar while the rest of samples were examined by the classic method at 37 deg C and the method of Rappaport-Vassiliadis at 37 deg C and 43 deg C. A total of 39 strains of Salmonella was isolated, 16 by the classic method and 23 by the combination of the methods. The isolated strains belonged 11 to the serotype S. typhimurium and 28 to the S. typhimurium V. Copenhagen (V.C.). The percentage of the infected animals was rather high while no carries were detected between the healthy animals. From the results of this work it can be concluded that the combination of the classic method with that of R.V. at 43 deg C gives the best results.
