Serological control of Brucellosis by rose bengal and complement fixation assays

We examined 498 bovinae, 332 sheep and 407 goat sera from 11 cattle herds, 18 sheep flocks and 16 goat flocks, by Rose Bengal (RB) and complement fixation (CF) screening method assays. The herds of flocks had a known history, such as, abortion, human infection, beginning of sanitation programme etc. The small ruminants aged more than 2 years old were unvaccinated or vaccinated (2 sheep and 1 goat flocks). From the results obtained 2 to 8 sera positive by CF or about 20 to 60% of the total seropositive animals of the herd or flock were not detected by RB from 2 cattle herds, 8 sheep flocks and 5 goat flocks. The results of the other cases were about the same or the RB to be slightly more sensitive. It seems from the above mentioned that the CF test may be in some cases more sensitive than the RB test, particularly in sheep also in goats and less in cattle. In such cases the use of both assays is recommended in order to minimize the errors in infected herds or flocks.
