Evaluation of herbicides for pre-emergence control of Lolium rigidum in wheat

Eight herbicides (pendimethalin, nitrofen+neburon, chlortoluron, chlortoluron+dipropetryn, terbutryne, isoproturon, diclofop-methyl and linuron) were tested for the control of Lolium rigidum Gaudin in three experiments over two growing seasons. Wheat and L. rigidum were sown in hard plastic net boxes (25X25X10 cm) lined with thin paper and filled with soil. The boxes were sprayed and then embedded into the field so plants grew under natural conditions. The effect of depth of L. rigidum emergence on the effectiveness of herbicides was also studied. Chlortoluron, chlortoluron+dipropetryn, isoproturon and diclofop-methyl gave the best control. These herbicides controlled L. rigidum effectively regardless of depth of emergence (15, 30, 45 mm). No phytotoxicity was observed on any of the wheat cultivars used.
