Effect of herbicides on growth, chemical composition, nitrate reductase activity and chrorophyll of tobacco

In field experiments, for two years herbicides were soil incorporated just prior to transplanting and their effects were examined 1) on plant fresh weight, nitrate reductase activity (NR) and chlorophyll content of leaves at 30 and 60 days from transplanting and 2) on nicotine,total N, and alkalinity number (AN) of the cured tobacco leaves. In other field experiments the herbicides were sprayed to the foliage, and the effects on NR and chlorophyll content of the tobacco leaves were examined a week later. None of the used herbicides changed significantly plant fresh weight at 30 (lower) or 60 (higher) days and nicotine or total N of cured leaves compared to the control receiving, as it is recommended, two cultivations. Inversely for certain herbicides plant fresh weight at 30 or 60 days after transplanting and nicotine or total N of cured leaves were significantly higher compared to the unweeded control for the first 30 days. No consistent treatment effect was measured for NR and chlorophyll of fresh leaves or AN of cured leaves.
