Effect of double-purpose (irrigation-drainage) drain systems on the salt and Na+ balances of the soil on areas with an alkaline subsoil

Changes observed over a period of 3 years indicate that both the irreversible method of operation and the use of sprinkler irrigation had a favourable influence on the salt and Na+ balance of the soil, while a reversible drainage system can only be employed without risk if both the soil and the groundwater near the surface have low salt and Na+ contents. Temporal changes in salt accumulation and leaching depended strongly on the soil properties, fluctuations in the groundwater level, the composition of the groundwater and the frequency of subsoil irrigation, which means that leaching was observed in one plot parallel with accumulation in the other. The dynamics of salt balance was also greatly affected by the water permeability of the soil and the salt content of the groundwater near the surface
