Examination of nutrient content of certain Norway spruce-provenances in an IUFRO provenance experiment of Gyongyossolymos (Northern Hungary)

Samples were taken in November from the one-year old sprouts of the sixth branch verticil. Only the N content was higher among all provenances of better growth, and the other nutriment elements showed a great similarity. No nutrient insufficiency was experienced in the case of any provenance. If the Norway spruce is planted outside the dividing line of its natural range, the outstanding role of climate is increasingly supplanted by the soil conditions. The difference in growth between the individual provenances depends in part only on genetic composition. The stand composition and other environmental factors also have an important effect on the biomass production and on the growth of trees. It seems that, if all nutriment elements are available in necessary quantity, the further nutriment-supply level does not result in a significant difference of growth concerning the better and weaker provenances
