Effect of treatment with probiotics on the intestinal flora of young geese

Ten young white geese hatched under large-farm conditions were destroyed on the day of hatching, further ten animals 24 and another ten, 48 h later. All animals were PM examined. Probiotic treatment, sampling and bacteriological examinations were carried out under the conditions of the predetermined experimental protocol. McConkey's culture medium was used for the isolation of coliforms, while the lactobacilli were isolated on a culture medium containing tomato. It was found that the digestive system of the animals was colonized by various lactobacilli within 24 h after hatching. Strains belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae only appeared on day 2. In response to the treatment the lactobacillus flora of the caudal parts of the intestines showed no considerable differences, in the digestive canal of the hatched animals the lactobacillus count - with the exception of the mucous membrane of mouth - did not essentially change, while the settling of coliforms was demonstrably inhibited
