The selenium content of hair covers and feeds were examined in 7 high yielding dairy cow herds produced in different geographic regions of Hungary. The daily selenium intake per cow and the selenium content of hair cover were 2055+-863 and 268+-101 microgram/kg, resp. As the average selenium content of the hair cover hardly exceeded the generally accepted critical value, the selenium supplementation can be justified. On the basis of the available data, the correlation between selenium intake and selenium content of hair cover was very strict (0.8) according to the calculated regression equation between the daily selenium intake (x) and the selenium content of hair cover (y = 71.2 + 0.096 x). On the basis of this, one can determine the state of selenium supply of the animals from the level of the selenium content of the hair cover
