Coloration of Virginia-type tobaccos

The coloration ability of 18 Virginia-type tobacco varieties was examined. Changes taking place in the chlorophyll content during the coloration process were traced by measuring the light reflection of leaf samples. One representative variety was chosen from each of the 6 characteristic groups established with the aid of cluster analysis for the in vivo determination of initial chlorophyll level and the analysis of the rate and extent of chlorophyll decomposition, which was compared with the in vivo chlorophyll level. The highest initial chlorophyll content was found for R 455 and the lowest for Hevesi 11. The rate and extent of chlorophyll decomposition was greatest for Hevesi 276, Hevesi 11 and Virginia D, which had a medium initial chlorophyll content. The chlorophyll decomposition was determined not by the initial chlorophyll level, but by the genetic properties of the variety. On the basis of the rate and extent of chlorophyll decomposition, the 3 varieties mentioned above presented a favourable picture, while NC 347, NC 744 and R 455 were late maturing and had unsatisfactory coloration
