In a 3-years experiment carried out on a rust-brown forest soil with an adobe sand structure and on a calcareous alluvial meadow soil, studies were made on the correlations between biomass production (primarily plant production) and environment management. Among the fertilizers, only the Sr content of superphosphate could cause problems. In cereals the majority of microelements remain in the straw (only Zn, Cu, Mo and Se are likely to accumulate in the grain), on limy chernozem the situation is similar for soya. The pH of the adobe sand dropped from 7.5 to 4.2 as a consequence of high NPK fertilizer rates (600, 900 kg/ha), while that of the alluvial soil did not change substantially. The NO3-N was easily leached from the ploughed layer, but not the NH4-N. On both soils the 2,4-D residue content in the wheat grain and bran remained below the demonstrable (harmful) level. Due to soil and groundwater pollution as well as to the quality of the produce and hygienic aspects, the subject is also of importance in connection with Hungary's application for EC membership
