The pathogen of the sudden seedling death syndrome in soya (Nectria haematococca var. brevicona, the anamorphous form of Fusarium solani) has not previously been reported in Hungary, but the disease has probably been known for a long time as Fusarium spp. It exerts a soil-borne infection, not being transferred by seeds, and causes damage to the cortical tissues, forming a large number of hyphae on the cotyledons. Its clamidospores are generally widespread on arable land and can be isolated from the 5-10-15-20-25 cm soil layers and from plant residues in the soil. As the result of infection, the hypocotyl becomes curved and distorted, no roots are formed, and the seedling dies in the primary leaf stage
