Heavy metal residues in fishes from the swamp of Makkasan

Heavy metal residues in fishes from the swamp of Makkasan were studied. The result showed that the residue concentration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in three spots gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus), was the highest compared to other fish species. Cadmium, lead, copper and zinc were detected from 43 fish samples at the concentrations of 0.32-2.57, 0.17-0.67, 0.15-1.67 and 1.47-18.05 mg/kg wet weight, respectively. Some water quality parameters (pH, oxygen, temperature, carbondioxide, alkalinity and hardness) determined from this study indicated that the water quality of the swamp of Makkasan was still suitable for the tolerant fish species such as snaked-head, gouramy, walking catfish. The total amounts of Pb and Cd in the flesh of some fish species were higher than the standard values which was dangerous for human consumption in Thailand
