Consumer acceptability of maize varieties in South Malang (Indonesia)
1990
Dorp, M. van | Utomo, J.S.
An exploratory survey was carried out to identify and understand consumers preferences for different maize varieties. Respondents for the survey were 169 female farmers who consume maize as their main staple food. Differentiation for consumer related criteria between local maize varieties turned out to be difficult for the respondents. They did make, however, clear differences between local and hybrids maize varieties. Local varieties were prefered to hybrid varieties, reflected in amounts consumed at the farm, resp. - 10 percent and - 40 percent of the total yield. Furthermore farmer explicitly expressed a preference for local varieties for all maize products mentioned to them. As negative characteristics of hybrid maize were mentioned a thick and hard pericarp, and a slightly better taste. On the other hand some farmers mentioned as a positive characteristic of hybrid maize the soft and cohesive texture that is obtained after preparation into "nasi jagung".
