Flower and vegetable growing in Israel employs approximately twenty thousand workers. In spite of the large number of employees, very small resources were invested in labour studies and in improvement of mechanization and operating condition. The present situation is that the input in labour is about half of the operative costs and dictates its profitability. The present work involves a study to evaluate the labour input in the various activities and to define the operations in which significant improvement can be achieved. This study was performed in 1992/93 in a well-managed tomato greenhouse. The activities involving large labour consumption such as fruit picking , leaf removal, plant training on trellises, spraying and packing, were studied. These activities are repeated numerous times over the season. The results show that the average labour investment for the local market in 4 to 4.5 working days per ton and for export 5.2 to 5.9 working days per ton, as opposed to 2.34 working days per ton in Holland
