Distribution and composition of rice stem borer species in Central Java (Indonesia)

A survey on the distribution and composition of rice stem borer species was conducted on the Northern and Southern part of Central Java on 12-15 April and 24-28 July 1989. The purpose of the survey was to study the changes of species composition, distribution, biotic and abiotic factors affecting the population, and species domination in the field. The observations were made in 16 kabupaten and 27 kecamatan. Five species were found, namely Scirpophaga incertulas Walker, S. innotata Walker, Sesamia inferens Walker, Chilo suppressalis Walker and Chilo polycrysus Meyrick. The most dominant species with the largest distribution was Scirpophaga incertulas Walker, followed by Sesamia inferens Walker, Chilo suppressalis Walker, S. innotata Walker and the least dominant was Chilo polycrysus Meyrick. The most affected areas by the stemborer during the survey were Brebes, Tegal and Sukohardjo.
