Control on mungbean pod borer Maruca testulalis (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) with chemical and microbial insecticide

Experiment to find how to control mungbean pod borer Maruca testulalis Geyer and yield losses caused by the insect had been conducted at Mojosari Experimental Station in the 1989 dry season. Randomized block design was used with four replications and 12 treatments. Monocrotophos, Fenvalerate, Deltamethrin and Carbaryl at the rate of 2000 cc, 1000 cc, 250 cc, and 1000 g in 500 of water/ha were used as chemical insecticide respectively. Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner in rate of 750 g in 500 l of water/ha were used as microbial insecticides. The results indicated that more larvae of M. testulalis were found on flower than on the pods. Twice after flowering application treatments of microbial insecticide Thuricide, Dipel, and Bactospene were as effective as Fenvalerate and Deltamethrin to reduce numbers of M. testulalis larvae and flower damage. In the case to reduce pod damage Fenvalerate and Deltamethrin were more effective. The damages of flower, pod and seed in the control plots up to 27 percent, 42 percent and 16 percent respectively. Highest seed yield (1.75 t/ha) was recorded in monocrotophos treated plots. In the dry and hot condition using Bactospene may increase mites population.
